KÓSMOS is the name of the trio composed by pianist Stefano Falcone, drummer Giuseppe D’Alessandro and bass player llaria Capalbo. It outlines an idea of music that is eloquent and purpose-driven, originating from the band’s cohesive, strong creative urgency. A fearless attitude to improvisation and extemporary practices together with grounded composition work make up for a bold trio sound that strikes as being equally fresh in approach and rooted in the idioms of jazz tradition and classical European music. The first recorded work of the trio is Back Home, a concept album dedicated and inspired by the life and vision of jazz pianist Lennie Tristano, which includes elaborations and arrangements of some of his tunes as well as original compositions by all band members.
Falcone’s piano solo is never short of lyricism or drama, but these qualities generally come unexpectedly and silently, filtered through an adventurous sensibility and the strategic use of silence that indicates its reflective - although never passive - nature.
The collaboration between pianist and composer Stefano Falcone and bassist/composer Ilaria Capalbo is a project that has evolved over a few years. The duo works on original compositions, co-writing and free improvisation, leading the tiny ensemble towards a distinctive, chamber-like sound that well represents the musicians' respective backgrounds and experiences. Their debut album, Invisible Atlas, has been released on Skidoo Records in November 2017. It traces a geographical and emotional path, a thread woven between the northernmost and southernmost edges of Europe, between classical and jazz music.
